Community
The Grand Portage Community has a population of 518 people, half of whom are enrolled members of
the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
Grand Portage was, and remains a meeting ground of diverse cultures. This legacy is reinforced
by annual events such as Rendezvous Days, our great Pow Wow celebrating Native customs and
traditions. Commerce continues to drive our economy.
History is also a big part of our present. Relive the fur trade era at Grand Portage National Monument.
Come to and see Minnesota’s only log school and the oldest Catholic log church in Minnesota.
For decades, Grand Portage Lodge & Casino has been an ever-increasing source of employment for
Band members and benefits for the Tribe. A great example of its contribution to the reservation is
the Gitchi Onigaming Community Center buit in 1994. The center offers a wide variety of recreational
activities, a swimming pool, senior center, teen center, library, computer room, and school. It also
provides services for day care and Head Start programs.
The casino has enabled the Band to develop, improve and expand our infrastructure needs within
the reservation: the building of a new and fully staffed health care clinic with regular visits by Cook
County physicians; a new trust lands and natural resources building; new staff housing developments;
an expanded waste treatment facility with continuing upgrades of the sewer system; a new water
system with a new water treatment plant; and also purchasing land with existing businesses and
placing the land back into Band ownership (Trust status).
